Bacalar and Chacchoben Tour

Bacalar owes its name to the Mayan word Halal which means "place surrounded by reeds." and it features one of the most impressive and deep "Cenotes or holy holes" in the whole Yucatan Peninsula, estimated deepness of this "holy hole" is about 200 mts. ( 600 ft ). Bacalar also has one of the most beautiful and great lakes of the Mexican Republic, it has more than 60 km long and 2 km at its widest part Bacalar lagoon or better known as the "Laguna de los 7 Colores" owes its displays of the different shades of blue, from deep blue to turquoise, to high calcium carbonate content of the rivers that feed it and the reflection of the different depths caused by five main cenotes that are an integral part of the lagoon.    Bacalar owes its name to the Mayan word Halal which means "place surrounded by reeds." and it features one of the most impressive and deep "Ceotes or holy holes" in the whole Yucatan Peninsula, estimated deepness of this "holy hole" is about 200 mts. In pre-Hispanic times, Bacalar was Uyamil capital community, one of the 16 provinces in which the peninsula was divided at the time, which had as main activity, trade. Bacalar was conquered in 1544 by Melchor Pacheco, who founded a town called Salamanca in the town of Bacalar. Bacalar served as the basis for the defense of the southern Yucatan Peninsula and due to this function and the constant pirate attacks built Fort San Felipe in 1733, commanded by Captain Alonso de Figueroa y Silva.

The first stage of construction consisted of: a base shaped diamond four-pointed star, four bastions called San Arthur, San Joaquin, Santa Ana and Santa Maria, a rectangular building (the Knight Alto), at that time the highest in the property, which received the name of Jesus Maria, equipped with a hood, powder store, grocery store, the commander room, accommodation for the troops and arms room.  With time, were added to the Fort a moat with drawbridge, ramparts to the ramparts, parapets were improved, increased the number of guns and the guard, so also were improved and increased facilities Caballero Alto, curtains rose fort and built new watchtowers.

In February 1948, during the Caste War, bacalar was taken and sacked by the Maya rebels led by Venancio Pec, who in his rebellion against the government ended most of the local population, the few survivors fled to Honduras British Belize City today. The city was retaken from rebel hands until 22 January 1901 by Mexican troops under the command of Vice Admiral Angel Ortiz Monasterio, thereby giving end the Caste War (1847-1901).

Bacalar repopulated has continued to this day, for 26 June, 2007 Bacalar government agreement was elevated to city status and designated as PUEBLO MAGICO.

Temple One

The Archaeological Area of Chacchoben was know only by tje locals, and was until 1972 that American Archaeological Peter Harrison reported the discovery of the ruins to the Mexican authorities. The excavations did not begin until 1994, conducted by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, and not open to the public until 2002.
